Description

Day Dreams of An Alumnus
Backward, turn backward, fair memory, I pray,
Back to St. Ambrose, just for a day!.
Back there again with the friends that I knew,
To live but once more with the White and the Blue I
Backward, 0 Fancy! My heart it invokes,
A return for but once to the sheltering oaks,
Where fairest of mem'ries lie hidden and still,
Loving and pure as the oaks on the hill.
Picture once more—0, how my heart sings—
The days of my youth 'neath her sheltering wings,
When life seemed so sweet, so pleasant and true,
Bright as the stars in the heavens of blue.
Whene'er to the present my fancy recalls
The bright, happy years in her welcoming halls,
My heart is o'erwhelmed with memory's tide,
From the old Alma Mater 'midst oaks spreading wide.
Her labors and joys, her sorrows and tears,
I see them once more through the mist of the years;
Her purpose and will, her treasures so vast,
I see them again as I dream of the past.
But why of the past? In the future again
My fancy doth see her, the teacher of men!
Still watching her children, each tenderest one,
Still guiding and leading them upward and on!
