Description

Basket Ball, '16
FOOTBALL season had hardly closed when a basket ball league
organized for the purpose of developing material for the first
team. Five teams were organized and Lee, G. O'Toole, G. Miller,
Troy and O'Connor were elected captains. The games played
were fast and furious and held the attention of the spectators.
A prize was offered for the winning team, and after many hard
fought games, G. O'Toole's team carried off the prize. The
league closed with Christmas vacation, and immediately upon the arrival of the
students after Christmas, the first call was issued by Coach Jones, and twelve men
responded.
In basket ball as in football St. Ambrose was represented by a team composed
of inexperienced men. Most of these men were small and light, but possessed
speed and showed great basketball spirit. During the first few weeks the men
were so evenly matched that it was a difficult task to pick a representative team.
The squad had been practicing but a short time when Coach Jones was compelled
to select a team to meet the fast William and Vashti quintet, who were later
champions of the "Little Eighteen" conference in Illinois. The final score of 48
to 22 does not indicate the closeness of the game. As this was the first contest
of the season, the coach and students were well satisfied with the showing made
by the team, against the Illinois champions.
In the next game the wearers of the blue and white showed their ability by
defeating Wartburg College of Clinton by the score of 41 to 17. The principal
scorers were Wehr and Troy, Wehr leading with seventeen points and Troy following with sixteen points.
The next game was played with Hedding College. Although the boys put up
a good fight they were defeated by the score of 34 to 11. The following game was
played against our old rivals at Dubuque, February 5th. The teamwork in this
game was a vast improvement over previous games. It was in this game that our
star center, Coonan, again and again brought cheers from the gallery by his spectacular playing. The game was hard fought and Dubuque in their home floor
succceeded in running up 32 points to our 17. A week later the Carthage five
