Description

15 was a red letter day at Penn, because the graduates had chosen that day for
their "homecoming." The college and grounds were fantastically decorated. The
anticipated victory was to be preserved in the moving pictures for the wonder
and envy of future generations. But when the first whistle blew, the strenuous
manner with which the St. Ambrose team started its attack took half the joy
out of the "homecoming." Miller started the "disagreeableness" by plowing over
the line for a touchdown in the first quarter. The try at goal failed and from
then until the last quarter the battle raged up and down the field. In the fourth
quarter Graham followed Miller's example and added six points to the score. This
ended the scoring, and the final whistle closed the game with the tally standing
of 12 to 0 in favor of St. Ambrose. During the game the St. Ambrose team made
many friends, who gave a social that evening in their honor. The next game was
scheduled with Upper Iowa University at Fayette on the 22d of October. Aided
perhaps by the long trip, the team was beaten by the score of 44 to 14. Ryan
scored a touchdown during the second quarter, after a brilliant 60-yard run by
Graham, and kicked goal. Wehr completed the scoring for St. Ambrose with a
25-yard run for a touchdown. Ryan again kicked the goal. The team lacked the
"pep" shown against Penn.
Five days later a practice game was secured with the Universal Chiropractic
team, which resulted in a score of 38 to 0, in favor of St. Ambrose.
The next scheduled game was with Parsons College, at Fairfield, October 30.
St. Ambrose started the scoring in the first quarter after Troy got away for a
sensational 40-yard end run, carrying the ball to Parsons 10-yard line. From
here Ryan went over the line on a forward pass. He also kicked goal. Shortly
afterwards St. Ambrose made two costly fumbles which gained Parsons two touchdowns. This ended the scoring until the last quarter, when Parsons earned a
touchdown, making the final score 21 to 7. The very costly breaks in the luck,
together with the early rising hour necessitated by the long trip, proved too
much for the St. Ambrose team. After this game Coach Jones put the team
through a drilling for the big game of the season, to be played November 6 with
our old river rivals, Dubuque College, formerly St. Joseph's College of Dubuque.
The game was played on the Ambrosian campus and was well attended. The
game started with Dubuque kicking to St. Ambrose, who advanced the ball forty
yards on smashes and then fumbled the ball. Shortly afterwards Dubuque carried the ball to the St. Ambrose 15-yard line, where they were held for three
