"Our Coach
Saint Ambrose.
Worcester, Mass.
ATHLETICS took on an unusually promising appearance for the year '15-'16
when a coach of much reputation among eastern colleges was secured to head
the Athletic Department of
Mr. George W. Jones of
is now in charge of all the
branches of athletics at the College. His
career as an athlete dates back to his school
days at Worcester Academy, where he became prominent as an athlete during his
course there, holding the 1000-yard record
for seven years.
From there he entered Holy Cross,
where he became distinguished for his ability
in Football, Baseball, Track and Basket Ball.
He was known here as an all-around athlete of the best and cleanest type, and his
stellar playing on the Varsity team was a great drawing card for the game of the
wearers of the Purple.
After graduating at Holy Cross, he was engaged in teaching at St. John's
in Danvers, Mass., where he turned out the championship football and baseball
teams for three years. At Worcester Tech he brought the standard of football
and baseball teams to such a remarkable superiority as to attract the admiration of athletic fans.
Saint Ambrose is, indeed, fortunate in securing his service. During the past
year he has made many friends among the student body, the S. A. C. boosters,
and all interested in the progress of Saint Ambrose. We are not unconscious of
the difficulties that Mr. Jones encountered this year in building up athletics at
the College. Football was dropped during the past three years and the track
team only witnessed its beginning and birth under the present coach. We all
feel confident that in a short time our athletics will be developed to an enviable
standard among colleges of the middle West.
