Description
Commercial Class Poem
Two years ago, our summer day
Was filled with thoughts as light and free
As breezes which at morning play
Among the trees and on the lea.
But all too soon those days were spent;
And we, with weary, aching heart,
From cheerful home and friends were sent
To St. Ambrose College, Davenport.
The wheels of time at first moved slow;
Those first few weeks seemed more like months.
Then joy in sports began to grow
And with it love for S. A. C.
Then met we with warm-hearted friends—
Good friends we could depend upon.
The boisterous laugh that joy portends
Was heard with many a joke and song.
As Christmas holidays drew near,
We counted days and even hours,
That would elapse 'ere friends so dear
Would clasp their outstretched hand in ours.
Two short, short weeks of ruffled rest,
And we, with energies renewed (?),
Came back resolved to do our best
To forget the happy interlude.
Weeks sped past, and soon 'twas June,
How jubilant we then did feel!
How many a merry whistled tune
Was heard where all would soon be still!
Vacation came—'twas gone—and soon
We rose one fair September morn
To board the 6:15. At noon
We dined at Dempsey's sumptuous board.
Now as this year is nearly gone,
And we look backward o'er its days,
We cannot say we've faults to find
For triumph now our toil repays.
Oh, when commencement night is here,
And our diplomas we receive,
'Tis then we'll thank you—S. A. C.
Oh! may we here a good name leave!
