forms of college athletics. Under his leadership, the team worked as
a unit. Captain Portel is an efficient outfielder and he occupied the
position of left field. As this was Portel's last year at St. Ambrose,
his loss will be keenly felt in athletics next year.
"Shanks" Lew, another veteran of the baseball diamond, held
down the first sack. No college player can give a better account of
this corner of the lot than our "Bird Man" Lew. Whenever the opposition takes on a particularly threatening attitude, "Shanks" is sent
to the mound, where his tornado wind-up, coupled with a chain lightning, soon drives the foe to seek shelter.
"Bill" Hynes, one of St. Ambrose's foremost athletes, has been
on the College nine for the past three years. "Bill" is small, but rapid.
He has been able at all times to show his superiority over rival aspirants to the position of second baseman.
Lawrence Murphy was back at his old place at third. "Murph"
stops everything that comes his way and, with his sure peg, he never
overthrows.
"Mac" McGinnis is our speedy shortstop. We remember that
Mac's club has broken up several exciting games. He has the same
stick for the coming season.
"Tub" Crowley is our fast and fleshy outfielder, and he filled the
center field position with a very few errors to his discredit. "Tub"
will not be with us next season.
"Nig" Baxter looked after the right garden. The Buxton lad
has a neat way of getting where the ball is, and his cunning work at
the plate got him to first as often as anyone on the team. "Nig" could
draw a pass from the Rock Island Lines.
Schmidt and Hughes did the twirling. Both showed speed and
control. They received the hearty support of every man on the team,
and the season's record is due in a large way to the work of the above
named artists.
"Bene" Walters played behind the bat. The way "Bene" protected that second landing was, to put it mildly, sensational. Toward
the end of the season Rube Wadle did some efficient backstopping.
"Oscar" O'Malley and "Jimmie" Flattery were the utility men.
With four of last year's men back this season, the prospects for
a winning team are bright.
