Description

Literary.
THE COLLEGE boasts of four societies, the Senior
Debating Society, the St. Thomas, the St. Ambrose,
and the Bonifacius-Verein.
These societies meet weekly, and are of inestimable value to the students along literary lines.
The Senior Debating Society is composed of mem-
bers of the Collegiate course, and meets every Sunday evening. The work of this society is confined chiefly to debates,
although essays, declamations, original poems and musical numbers
are also included on its programs. The art of Dramatic Reading is
developed.
The St. Thomas Society, composed of the students of the Rhetoric
classes, meets every Sunday evening. Debates, essays, original stories, poems, and so forth, have a place in this organization. Its chief
aim is to teach the members to speak with confidence and assurance,
in public, and to cultivate a taste for correct expression of thought.
The St. Ambrose Society is made up of the members of the Grammar classes. This society endeavors to impress upon its members
the need of a precise and clear style, the value of a vocabulary, the
benefits of careful and continued reading, and at the same time to furnish entertainment for the younger members.
One of the most practical of the College organizations is the German Society—the Bonifacius-Verein. This society carries on all its
business and its entire programs in German, thus affording its mem-
bers an excellent opportunity of acquiring the knowledge of German
literature and thought, and a fluency in the use of this language.
Father Hauber is the Moderator of this society, and to his zeal and
interest much, if not all, the success of the Bonifacius-Verein is due.
Illustrated travelogues of Germany form one of the many modes of
instruction and entertainment.

The College Dramatic Society is composed of all those students
who show any desire, any love, any talent for Dramatic work. The
large number of members and the excellence of the work show that
this society is rich in these qualifications. A completely equipped
Dramatic Hall is at the disposal of its members. Each semester this
society gives a play for the public.
