ARDINAL NEWMAN once said that, "Truth is often the
product of many minds working freely together." This definition of truth conveys pretty well the aim, purpose and results of this literary organization. However, it must not be
understood that before our initiation into this society that
we were sceptics and that our primary purpose was to be convinced of the possibility of truth. Not at all. If any one was ever so unfortunate as to have such doubts he was certain to put them aside at our assemblies.
We were almost entirely concerned with the problems of the day. Certainly the impending crisis, as it is termed by some, furnished abundance
of material for amateur as well as professional debating. Indeed it was
quite beyond our aim to meet such critical problems, as are standing out
before us today, with a sound and practical solution. We leave the solution
of these problems to the master minds among the diplomats of the country.
Nevertheless each and every one of us gave our views on the questions that
were introduced. And by means of the keen intellect of a Rohret and the
broad-minded will-be-attorney Wolfe and the budding rhetorician, David
Murphy, we found such debating not only interesting but educational as
well.
As only one hour a week was given to our meeting, we found that
our time was very limited, especially when some of the loquacious members
from the southern and western parts of the state took their stand. We
agree with Cardinal Newman in his definition of truth and we are also convinced that many minds, as are found in the Manning Society, when working freely together inevitably arrive at truth.
