Senior Commercial Class History
THE YEAR 1914 saw the entrance into St. Ambrose College of
some twenty or more young men who registered as Junior
Commercials. This was the foundation of the now illustrious
Commercial class of 1917. As Juniors the class took part in
all school activities, especially athletics. In this first commercial year the foundation of our business training was laid
and when we returned to St. Ambrose in the fall of 1916 we were ready to
cope with the more difficult work of the last year of commercial.
Mr. Bernard J. Marron, the new commercial teacher from New York
State, was found to be a young man affable and learned and one who could
sympathize with our difficulties in the profound mysteries of bookkeeping.
Under Mr. Marron's tutorage we soon made rapid advances in all lines and
we are now imbued with the feeling that we can successfully give battle
to the intricate problems of the business world.
But studies were not the only things that took up the time and
thoughts of the Senior Commercial class, they also took part with much
enthusiasm in other school activities, especially athletics. Players were
contributed to 'Varsity football, basket-ball and baseball. In Junior athletics
Commercial men were not wanting and the ranks of the three great college
sports were filled with players from the Senior Commercial class. In the
Inter-Class track meet our representatives acquitted themselves with
honors, many of them carrying off the bacon in the form of silver and
bronze medals.
Class rings were secured by the Class of 1917, a proof of their progres-
siveness and ability to keep abreast of the Academic classes. Upon our
graduation we will probably not return to St. Ambrose, but I am sure all
will feel an interest in their Alma Mater and will endeavor to keep in touch
with her. Here's wishing luck to the Commercial Class of 1918, our worthy
