Community
Foreward
The charter of St. Ambrose College tells us that the College covers
a twelve square block area in the Glenn Armil section of the city of
Davenport, Iowa. Here then is the physical size of the College.
But what effective means of measurement are there for the intellectual and cultural spheres of influence which a college, indeed any
cultural institution, dominates? In this situation the boundaries become
no longer specific.
Certainly any such institution has its most profound influence in
its immediately surrounding area, in this case the Quint-Cities. Yet,
who can put a yard stick to the economic, populative, intellectual, religious and academic ascendancy which St. Ambrose has had on this area
for the past eighty-three years.
Realizing that' no truly effective measurement of this sort could
be made, the staff of the 1965 Oaks has set out to give some indications
of the more overt influence. We have readily found the superficial influences of the College. These we give you in this book. But the remaining
fields of influence remain for the reader himself to uncover. This field
is inbred into these Iowa and Illinois communities. These intellectual
seeds can not be set down in words or photographs. But we of the Oaks
feel that this book will enable you to come to a greater awareness of the
place of St. Ambrose in the community. For indeed it is the duty of every
college to produce leaders for the community of men.
