1948 BEE BASEBALL SUMMARY
The St. Ambrose baseball nine completed
one of the most successful season's in the
history of the sport at the Davenport school.
Under the capable leadership of Coach Jim
O'Connor, the Bee diamond men won six contests while losing three. Two of these losses
came at the hands of the strong Bradley University nine at Peoria and the other to Upper
Iowa University at Fayette, Iowa.
The Bee sluggers had originally scheduled
12 games for the season but rain interfered on
three occasions and caused cancellation of the
tilts. The victories were held over Monmouth
College, Upper Iowa, Western Ill. (Macomb)
—2, and Univ. of Illinois Extension (Galesburg)
—2.
Paul McAndrew and Chuck Stiglich were
the No. 1 and 2 men on Coach O'Connor's
pitching staff with Don Bauman and Bill Sum
handling the catching duties. Joe Lucas, Don
Morris, and Art Billie were the leading hitters
for the Ambrosians. Other outstanding performers for the Bees were Gola Waters, John
"Red" McManus, Jim McManus, Don Bauman,
Jack Finigan, Wayne Stone, and Paul Wolfe.
