Corpus Christi, Texas, Nov. 20, 1948:
After completing the longest trip ever taken by a
St Ambrose football team, the Bee gridders ended the
season by coming from behind in the last mmute to
defeat the University of Corpus Christi, 15-13, in what
was described by Corpus Christi sports writers as
"one of the best attractions ever seen in the state of
Texas".
Coach Mullins once again had to change his lineup
considerably because of injuries, and the difference in
temperature didn't help Moon's cause. But the tight
was still left in the Bees as they started right away
on the first play of the game by tackling the Corpus
Christi ball-carrier in the end-zone tor a safety. The
Tarpons went to work and scored two touchdowns on
runs by Hatley and Berry. "Fireplug" Don Doody
went to work by grinding off several good gains which
Doody scored to narrow Tarpon's lead to 13-8 at
halftime.
The Bees completely dominated the play in the third
period; the Corpus Christi gridders had only one play
from scrimmage. Then in the fourth period the high-
light of the year took place when the Bees with only
one minute left and on their own 46 yard market
loosened two successive passes from Don Berg to Mike
Scheck which scored the winning touchdown Art
Michalik converted to make the final score read 15 to
13 in favor of Larry "Moon" Mullins Bees.
