Delta Epsilon Sigma is a national scholastic
honor society for students and graduates of
Catholic colleges and universities. Established
in 1939, the society now has over sixty chapters
and continues to expand steadily.
This year, according to custom, a faculty
committee consisting of Walter G. Becker,
Charles Costello, Chester Mann, Thomas Gart-
land and William Ryan honored seventeen seniors with appointment to membership in the
St. Ambrose Xi chapter of the fraternity. Selection was based on scholastic achievement at
St. Ambrose plus their interest and participation
in extracurricular activities. This group was
formally inducted in January but had been active since notification of eligibility in November
of 1948.
Delta Epsilon Sigma has for its purpose the
recognition and encouragement of true scholarship on the part of graduates of Catholic colleges and universities. The founders, under the
Most Rev. Edward A. Fitzgerald, had the dual
purpose of uniting scholars whose standards
of achievement were distinctive and inaugurating a far-reaching and intensive program of
intelligent Catholic living.
The Greek letters Delta Epsilon Sigma, as
interpreted by St. Thomas, read: "It is for the
wise man to set things in order." It will be the
responsibility each year of those members who
are still enrolled at St. Ambrose to provide,
through their example and guidance, an incentive to scholastic accomplishment to their
fellow students.
