Basketball
St. Ambrose College 1947-48 basketball team finished
the season with a commendable record of 13 wins and
13 losses. Although the Bees started off in a rather
hapless fashion, they found themselves in mid-season and
won 10 of the last 12 ball games.
The combination of Don Morris and Gola Waters at
guard, Jack Donnelly at center, Kirby Lawlis and Bill
Murdoch, seemed to be the answer. Those five looked
exceptionally well together and should do "big things" 7
during the 48-49 season.
Macomb, 111., Dec. 10—Western Illinois State racked up
its fourth straight victory here Tuesday night, defeating
St. Ambrose college of Davenport, Iowa 61-41. Both teams
played on even terms for the first few minutes of the
first half, but midway in the period of Leathernecks took
the lead and held a comfortable 37-17 edge at halftime.
Davenpor,t Dec. 17—A greatly improved St. Ambrose
College basketball team pulled the upset of the week in
college basketball Tuesday night in the Davenport high
gym when they stunned the St. Mary's Redmen from
Winona, Minnesota, 59-45.
Probably the finest game of the season, as far as the Kansas City, Kan., Jan. 7-Paul Martel forward and
Ambrose fans are concerned, was the Bees 47 to 38 center Bill Richter paced Rockhurst college to a 53-47
triumph over Mickey Marty and Company of Dubuque, victory over the St. Ambrose Bees of Davenport Iowa
known otherwise as Loras. The Bees hadn't been able
to knock off the Duhawks since 1943.
Three records were broken by the McKinnon coached
quint. Jack Donnelly set a new individual seasonal scoring record by grabbing a total of 277 points. The old
record of 268 was compiled by Don Davis during the
46-47 season. A new game scoring record of 80 points
was mustered by the Ambrose quintet against their
rivals from across the Mississippi, Augustana College.
The Bees also set a seasonal total point record of 1427.
Five sophomores and three freshman comprised the
list of letter winners for the 1947-48 basketball season.
Sophomores: Captain Don Morris, Streator, Illinois; Jack
Donnelly, Peoria, Illinois; Jack Errion, Peoria, Illinois;
Ben Kristal, Streator, Illinois; Kirby Lawlis, Forest City,
Illinois. Freshman: Gola Waters, Kewanee, Illinois; Bill
Murdoch, Washington, Indiana; Jerry Scherer, Chicago,
Illinois.
Tuesday night.
Atchison, Kans.—St. Benedict's scored 19 points in the
last eight minutes to defeat St. Ambrose 66-41, in a Midlands conference basketball game here Wednesday night.
Davenport, Jan. 11—Scoring 15 points in the last four
minutes of play the St. Joseph Pumas pulled away from
the St. Ambrose college Bees last night to win 70-62.
Rock Island, 111., Jan. 14—St. Ambrose, led by Bill
Murdoch's 16 point production, defeated Augustana's
basketball team 55-38 Tuesday night. St. Ambrose led
at halftime, 20-17.
Dubuque, la., Jan. 18—In complete control throughout
the entire contest, the high-powered Loras Duhawks
