This is a likeness of of Chief Mahaska, a.k.a. White Cloud, for whom Mahaska County, Iowa, was named. Mahaska was born in 1784 and was a member of the Ioway Native-American Nation. Residing in the current area of Oskaloosa, Chief Mahaska utilized the resources of the Skunk (Chiquaqua) River and Des Moines River to create a dependable and established environment for his people. Chief Mahaska will be remembered for his cooperation with the American government in ceding the territory of his people to the Americans in the 1820's and 1830's. Chief Mahaska died in 1834, leaving the responsibility of the Ioway Native-American Nation to his son, Mahaska the Younger.
