Dear Prof. Schmidt:
I am sending you some material from Prof. Geo. W. Carver of Tuskegee, Alabama, on which I wish to make the following comment. Professor Carver came to me and Mrs. Pammel and I tried to get a room for him. Among the people consulted was Tama Jim Wilson or rather Mrs. Wilson. A room could not be found for him, largely I think because he was a colored boy and therefore I gave him the use of the room I had in North Hall, which he occupied during the entire time he was here. The people to whom I applied for a room liked Mr. Carver well enough but owing to the fact that he was a colored boy they all said they would not like to have him in the house. That is the reason why I gave him the use of the room I had the disposition of. Mr. Carver was then the only colored boy in the institution and for that matter, the only one in Ames. The case now would be entirely different.
