ST. AMBROSE 25 —ST. CLOUD 14
St. Ambrose overcame a 14-12 deficit at half time, going
on to beat St. Cloud State Teachers College, 25:14, in its
season opener at St. Cloud, Minnesota, on Sept. 21.
Joe Jones, the Bees' battering fullback, and speedy Joe
DeSoto scored the last half touchdowns which enabled St.
Ambrose to come from behind at the midway point.
The Bees blended a rugged running game, sparked by
Jones and DeSoto, with the strong throwing arm of Bob
Webb to rack up their second win in as many starts over
the Minnesota school.
St. Ambrose scored twice in the first period — Jones bull-
ing through from three yards out for one, and DeSoto
shooting over for the other on a 14 yard scramble. Greg
Sharke missed the conversions giving the Bees a 12-0 lead.
In the second period St. Cloud scored twice. Quarterback
Bob Waxlax sneaked over for the first and halfback Bernie
Wesloh plunged through for the second. Extra points by
Larson and Kelly gave the Teachers a 14-12 half time lead.
After taking a poor St. Cloud punt, the Bees marched 64
yards in 15 plays to score in the third period. Jones again
scored on a one yard plunge. Webb passed to DeSoto for
the extra point.
After the ensueing kickoff, Webb intercepted a St. Cloud
pass on the Teachers' 35 yard line, setting in motion the
fourth period St. Ambrose score. DeSoto scooted in for
the TD five plays later from 12 yards out, icing the game
for the Bees.
Co'Captains for the 1957 grid campaign were
Roy Owen and Clint Westemeyer.
Co-Captains for the coming 1958 St. Am-
brose football team are; top: Bob Webb;
right; Greg Sharko.
Halfback Bob Varley traces yardage in the St. Cloud game — the
season's opener for the Bees.
