Description

Malatestinic's delicate touch under the boards gives bis rooters
something to "Cro" about.
There followed a string of nine consecutive
games away from home. Morningside was encountered first, and they revenged themselves
for last season's NAIA loss, edging the Bees
80-77. Next came one of the most unusual
games of the season to be played anywhere.
Talented Western Illinois topped St. Ambrose
58-57 in a fabulous six overtimes, equalling
the national record for overtimes in a college
game. The winning points came on a 45 foot
shot, made with three seconds remaining.
Following this disheartening loss, the Bees
came back strong to beat Great Lakes, 69-66.
Quincy's holiday tournament was the next
order of business. Jim Fay's 28 points led
the way over first round opponent, Kirksville,
Missouri, Teachers College, 81-68. Illinois
Normal became the second tourney victim,
not without a struggle, 76-75. Bob Cannady
scored 29 points. The finals found St. Ambrose pitted against old tormentor Western
Illinois, and once again the Leathernecks
proved superior, this time by 69-50.
Lewis College fell, 91-85, then St. Norbert's
stopped the Bees 91-80, despite a splendid performance by Willy Malatestinic. He scored
25 points and grabbed 18 rebounds. Mighty
De Paul applied the crusher 104-62, making
53% of their shots, and catching St. Ambrose
without Bob Cannady, then scoring leader.
At last the Bees returned to the friendlier home court atmosphere, and immediately
launched a seven game winning streak. This
was despite the now permanent loss of Bob
Cannady and his replacement Gil Peterson.
Lewis College started the string, losing 86-78,
as Jim Wolf scored 21 points and Fay got 20.
Next foe was Regis, 85-76 victim, as St. Ambrose played one of its best games. The team
made 47% of its field goal tries as Bill Dart's
Fay's book pass gives Wolf an easy fast-break bucket in
Bees rout of Creigbton.
Rich Brennan, out-numbered but not
out-fought, bangs on for a jump ball.
