The St. Ambrose College Chapter of the American
Chemical Society was founded in 1951, with fifteen
charter members. The purpose of the chapter is to
stimulate interest in the science field among the chemistry, physics, and biology students. At present the
chapter has seventeen members and offers to the students
an interesting variety of activities including field trips,
movies, lectures, and social events.
During the past year the A.C.S. has sponsored trips
to Thundicum Research Hospital and Kanartex Coating Company in Galesburg, Illinois, Amana Freezer
Plant and Amana Woolen Mills in Amana, Iowa, and
the Bendix Aviation Corporation of Davenport. The
members have had the opportunity to attend a series
of lectures presented by professional chemists in the
area on such subjects as paper chromatography, radio
isotopes, and organic vinyl reactions. Again, this year
the St. Ambrose Chapter is preparing to participate in
the second annual Iowa-Illinois Undergraduate Science
Conference. A.C.S. also sponsored a set of atomic bomb
orientation movies for the entire student body.
The high-light of the year for the chapter as well as
for the entire school, science division, and the chemistry
department is the meeting of the Iowa Academy of
Science on the St. Ambrose Campus this spring.
The Chemistry Club for the most
part is concerned with its particular department. However, the
club also showed an active interest in homecoming by entering
a float which took one of the
high honors in the parade.
