One of Our Young Men Gets Childish With Results
Miss Helen
Dear Friend,
I suppose you think it awfully queer receiving a letter from someone you have never
heard of or read of. I saw your name on an algebra book that I am using. I thought
I would write you just for fun. This is my first year in St. Ambrose. I am in second
year high work. I don't know how old you are but you must be about sixteen. How
far did I miss it? Well, I don't want to annoy you too much with this letter. So I
thought I'd better stop. I would like to hear from you when you get this.
Yours,
Like the Roof of a House.

At Even'tide
I traveled along the milky way
At eve, 'bout five o'clock;
The old red cow was eating hay,
So was the rest of the stock.
The farmer sat on a three-legged stool,
The hired man did the same.
By the old windmill in the evening cool,
The fowls were having a game.
The farmer sat by the old red cow;
The milk slid into the pail.
The look was mild on the old cow's brow
As she thoughtfully chewed a nail.
Then slipping a hoof in the milk so white,
She heaved a gentle sigh ;
And through the gloom of falling night
The pail went sailing high.
The farmer rose, and the words he said
I don't just now recall,
But if wishes fell on that cow's head
She wouldn't be here at all.
