THE SCIENCE CLUB
In response to a movement for better organization of the study of
scientific subjects, Professor Yancey sponsored the Science Club of St.
Ambrose, composed of men from the various science classes of the
school. The club met with instant approval on the part of those fortunate enough to be included in the list of candidates, and it bids fair to
win the respect and consideration of all.
The object of the club, as expressed by the constitution, is twofold:
"1. To enable interested and willing students to do advanced scientific
work, and, 2. To present the results of such work to the student body,
and to the public at large." The inability of any individual to make
a comprehensive study of all the more important modern sciences is
manifest; hence the importance of mutual contribution in building up
a store of scientific knowledge.
Membership was limited to those students who showed sufficient
talent and application to justify the hope that they might profit by the
special work of the club. The enforcing of these requirements greatly
facilitated the choice of candidates. The sixteen charter members met
for the first time on March 21, elected officers, and planned the work of
the year. Then, a constitution having been drawn up and adopted, the
club became a reality.
Meetings are held every second and fourth Tuesday of the month.
As soon as all routine business is transacted, attention* is turned to interesting scientific questions. Papers on these subjects are presented by
various members of the club. The work of the students is supplemented
by lectures from men of recognized scientific ability. Special attention
is given to the coordination and inter-relation of the different sciences.
At the time when this book goes to press, the product of the club's investigations has not yet been presented to the outside world, but its
progress seems to indicate that the Science Club has amply filled the
want of some such organization at the college.
