JUNIOR BASEBALL
Due to the fact that baseball has given way to track in most high
schools, Father Adrian has found it well nigh impossible to prearrange a complete schedule of school teams for his Juniors. In the
past few years he has had to face this situation and this season has
proven no exception. However, in order that the Saintlings might be
kept busy the mentor has secured games with several semi-professional
teams about the Tri-Cities. This, in a way, places the Juniors in a
peculiar position for, if they are to make a clean sweep of their games,
battling against such foes, they must have a very formidable organization.
Glancing at the squad before the season opens, they have the appearance of likely material from which a powerful club can be developed.
With fifteen candidates for the infield positions and seven for the outfield, Father Adrian hopes to mould a team capable of upholding the
cherished record of preceding nines.
No doubt the team will be built around Lew and Herlehey, the only
regulars from last year. In "Shanks" the Juniors have a steady first
sacker who can always be depended upon, for he knows the game from
all angles. "Duck" Herlehey, playing behind the plate, is a clever
catcher and especially good at nipping a man endeavoring to steal. However, his hitting is his greatest asset, having led his team mates in this
department last year. No doubt he will repeat this performance during
the present campaign.
Elmer Besten is undoubtedly the strongest of the pitching candidates
and there is little doubt but that he will be the first string twirler.
"Besty" played good ball pitching for the Midgets last year but it was
during the summer that he began to hit the high marks, setting up the
wonderful record in the Davenport City Playground League of averaging seventeen strikeouts per game. It was chiefly through this brilliant achievement that his team mates pulled through a long schedule
undefeated. Elmer is a clever man in the box and should prove a wonderful aid for the Little Saints. It seems almost certain that the Juniors
will be able to give a good account of themselves during the present
season.
