VARSITY BASEBALL
Encouraged by his success in football and basketball, Manager Hannon determined
to place a championship baseball team in the field, one that would rival if not surpass
the wonderful aggregation of 1921. Fortunately he was able to secure Benny Wolters,
star catcher on last year's K. of C. nine, for coach.
Basketball was hardly shelved before battery practice began in the gymnasium.
With the advent of favorable weather, outdoor workouts became the order of the day.
These drills soon brought to light prospects that seemed to indicate the realization of
Mr. Hannon's hopes. Affairs were running smoothly when the manager received the
disheartening news that Morrissey, star hurler of last year's squad, and Hugh Janney,
slugger and outfielder, would no longer be with the team. In addition to this loss
another blow was inflicted upon the team due to the fact that Roger Nolan, captain
and first base marvel of a year ago, is now pursuing his studies at Notre Dame University.
Thus our mainstays for a championship team were gone and Coach Wolters faced
the trying situation of building up the team from the new material at hand. Among
these men, Costello, former Junior pitcher, showed real class on the mound, displaying
his ability to fill the position left vacant by Morrissey. West and Gannon, pitchers of
no mean ability, also appeared as candidates for the mound position and with these
men the pitching staff will be complete.
The lineup for the rest of the team has not as yet been determined, but from the
letter men available, Bouquot, snappy little second baseman, Phelan, star catcher, and
Lew, outfielder last year but the probable first baseman of the present nine, are expected
to serve as a basis upon which a team capable of upholding the honor of St. Ambrose
will be constructed.
The schedule, although incomplete at present, will include games with several of
the foremost college teams in this vicinity and it is probable that a week's trip to the
north will be arranged. Should the Saints make a clean sweep of all the games on this
chart their position in baseball circles will be assured.
