MIDGET BASKETBALL
Of the many teams wearing the St. Ambrose colors there is none that upholds her
reputation more effectively than does the Midget basketball team. Each year it becomes a little more difficult to supply the small Ambrosians with opposition. Many a
team has learned through bitter experience that there is nothing to be gained from a
contest with the baby Saints and declines to place its name on the Midget schedule.
Consequently during the season just closed the team was obliged to go far out of its
class on several occasions in order to keep its schedule filled. However, this seemed
to be a matter of slight importance to the Midgets and they completed the season without a defeat. This makes the third time in three years that they have played
through a difficult schedule without a single reverse, a record of which any team
might well be proud.
This year the Midgets exhibited a brand of basketball seldom seen in a team of
their size and experience. The team members and Father Adrian, their highly capable coach, are to be congratulated upon their season's work. In the Midgets St.
Ambrose has a team without a superior in their class and they deserve the best that the
school can give them in the way of loyal support.
To go over the games played this year would involve too much needless repetition;
for the great majority of the Midgets' contests was one overwhelming victory after
another in which their opponents never had a chance. The struggle with the Y
Midgets however was one instance where the littlest Saints were forced to extend
themselves. The two teams staged a fast and furious game but our athletes preserved
their good name by nosing out their determined opponents by the score of 16 to 13.
Troop Twelve of Rock Island also threatened to cause trouble but their best efforts
only served to gain for them the undesirable portion of a 19 to 13 game. These were
the most closely contested of the seventeen straight contests annexed by the Midgets
during the season.
Perfect teamwork characterized the playing of the team throughout the year, so
much so that it is impossible to pick the work of any single individual as an outstanding feature. Capt. E. Powers and Lawler proved themselves an exceptional pair of
forwards, Till performed at center in a manner that left nothing to be desired, while
Sparks and Fennell in addition to offering a stone wall defense to all opposition
rivalled the forwards as point getters. Garvey, Reedy and Comerford comprised a
very dependable reserve force and Devine, Nigg, O'Connor, Clancy and Miclot all
contributed very effectively to the success of the 1922 team.
