this stage of the season it might be stated that Davenport was eliminated in the fourth
round of the state tournament which was won by the Cedar Rapids team, a quintet
that suffered defeat at the hands of the Juniors.
At Wilton the following week the Juniors were defeated 17 to 16 in a close, hard
fought game. Father Adrian's men were greatly handicapped by the small cracker-
box gym at Wilton and were unable to play in their best form.
In the Cedar Rapids game the Saintlings accomplished a feat which has been the
ambition of Junior teams for years. Season after season, they have given their best
efforts in an attempt to defeat the powerful Bunnies. Sometimes the score was rather
decisive, sometimes only a single point would separate the two teams at the end of the
game, but always Cedar Rapids has won. This year however the impossible was
achieved. With everything against them Father Adrian's team entered the game
determined to win. With a spirit that only a Junior team can possess they played
their powerful opponents to a standstill throughout a thrilling game, fought through
one extra period on the same terms, and in a second over-time session gained a one-
point advantage and the game by a score of 16 to 15.
In return games with Geneseo and Cambridge the Juniors came through victorious.
Geneseo presented an aggregation of unusual size and strength and it was no small
accomplishment for the Juniors to turn them back with a 16 to 13 deieat. At Cambridge the Saintlings had a hard time and were behind throughout almost the entire
game. It was only by a brilliant rally in the last few minutes that they succeeded in
nosing out the mighty Cambridge men by a two-point margin.
The last game of the schedule was with Des Moines Catholic Academy quintet in
which the Juniors were victorious, 15 to 8. This game was slow and the Juniors
were not forced to open up at any time.
As in other years the Junior lineup was at no time certain for Father Adrian would
use the combination which he thought would prove most effective against a certain
team. Costello, Powers, Skelley and Hawes handled the forwards, while Capt. Hippler
and Skelley alternated at the pivot. Herlehey and Besten played the guards. With
these men Father Adrian had a well balanced first squad in which one man was practically as good as another. Hippler and Costello were selected on the mythical tricky team and were the leading scorers for the Juniors. The other men who contributed to the success of the team were Kerker, Kelley, Wagner, Lew, Rogge, Roberts,
and Nolan.
