Description

The Ambrosian
After the Augustana disaster the Ambrosians met the famous Oswego Globe Trotters, former world's champions, and staged a comeback. The Oswegans in spite of
their years of experience were confused by the Saints' brilliant attack and attempted
many wild shots, but were finally made to acknowledge their defeat when the whistle
blew with the score 12 to 11 against them. It was a closely contested affair, featured
by the spectacular guarding of both teams.
The next two games were lost to Muscatine and Iowa Wesleyan respectively. The
first encounter resulted in a 19 to 17 score. This loss can be accounted for by inability at the foul line as each team scored five baskets. The Mt. Pleasant affair was
a hard fought contest and only by a long shot in the last minute of play were the
Wesleyans able to win. The score was 24 to 22.
Never will the Ambrosians forget the fracas which occurred on the night of February 22. For on that evening we entertained our ancient foe, Augustana. Confident of
an easy victory, "Augie" crossed the river with four hundred rooters. It did not take
long to reveal the fact that the Swedes' position was not so secure as they had imagined. The game was a thriller from start to finish. In the beginning the Saints had
all the better of the argument, piling up five points and holding their bewildered opponents scoreless for seven minutes. Then Augustana came to with a bang and had a
score of 13 to 9 in their favor at half time. The second half was more hotly contested
than the first. Augustana learned that they were now facing a far different team from
the one they defeated so completely earlier in the season. However, they managed to
keep in the lead most of the time; the Ambrosians, fighting desperately, evened the
count several times only to have "Augie" again forge to the front. With the game
practically over, a score of 25 to 22 seemed to indicate that St. Ambrose had fought in
vain. But the Saints simply would not accept defeat. West, rising to the occasion,
performed the seemingly impossible task of making two baskets in forty seconds, and
so forced a 26 to 25 defeat on the Swedes. Augie's supporters were apparently unprepared and unable to face such a situation. To point out individual stars on the
Saints' team would be an impossibility. St. Ambrose was represented throughout the
game by five real players who gave all they had in a great game and the school acclaimed their victory by a celebration unequalled in St. Ambrose's athletic history.
The Varsity wound up the season by handing Loyola University of Chicago a 32
to 19 defeat on the College floor. The Saints had little difficulty with the visitors and
were at no time seriously threatened. Thus the season ended.
