Description

The Ambrosian
team of Des Moines Catholic College. In a well fought game the Capital City grid-
ders turned their advantage in weight into a 21 to 7 victory at the expense of a rather
crippled St. Ambrose team.
Returning to their native haunts the Junior Ambrosians celebrated Armistice Day
with a return to the form which distinguished their playing earlier in the season.
Sigourney was the opposing team; although they maintained throughout the game a
fighting spirit which was much to their credit, a single first down was the only reward of their efforts. In the first half the Juniors confined themselves to straight
football and piled up a commanding lead through the end runs of Hippler and the
smashing of Herlehey. In the second half they uncorked probably the best exhibition
of passing ever presented on the St. Ambrose gridiron. In spite of the almost impossible condition of the field, five consecutive passes were completed for substantial gains,
and three others were successfully pulled during the half. The end of the game revealed a score of 84 to 0.
The game at Muscatine on Thanksgiving Day was a fitting close to a remarkable
season. During three quarters of the game the two teams entertained a capacity
crowd with a hard fought, scoreless tie. In the final period the Juniors opened up
with an overhead attack, that netted them two touchdowns and the game. This 14
to 0 victory marked the end of a most successful season. Lender the able leadership of
Captain Conway the Juniors defeated some of the best teams in the state, and by
comparative scores they held the undisputed right to the Tri-City Championship.
The comparison is as follows: Moline defeated Rock Island 9 to 0 and Davenport
won from Moline 6 to 0. Then the best Davenport could do was to hold the strong
Clinton team to a 6 to 6 tie, while the Little Saints downed Clinton by the overwhelming score of 49 to 0. These figures should be a sufficient indication of the relative merits of Tri-City teams. Captain Conway, Besten, and Kelly were placed on
the All Tri-City Team while Herlehey and McGinn received places on the second
eleven.
Finally the Junior total, 386 points, piled up in eight games against 35 for their
opponents is another testimony of the greatness of the Junior team; a team that has
done much to place the name of St. Ambrose high in athletic circles.
