Description
The scenery for "The Merry
Widow" was built by students of
Ambrose under the tutelage of
Father Greene. Using Mr. Chouteau's set designs Jim Thomas, Roger
Ezell, Dave Missauage and Jerry
Baur spent several weekends building and painting. This gave them
needed experience for set construction for the coming years when,
hopefully, they will be doing shows
of their own. This is one example
of training students in the Music
and Drama Departments receive.
As Roger says, "You can read how
to build a flat out of a text book,
but when you are doing the actual
building it's a big difference."
Tom Sallak, picture at left, begins
drawing the drop for Act III. This
is the stage at Maxim's. Tom also
painted two other drops for Acts I
and II, which were the entrance
corridor to the Marsovian Embassy
and the garden of Sonia's villa,
respectively. The backdrops were
twenty feet by forty-one feet.
The beautiful, wealthy Madame Sonia is besieged by a throng of fortune hunters at the Legation party. The antics
of Cascada and St. Brioche are of interest to the guests except Danilo who conceals his love for Sonia. The scene closes
with the group singing, "Who Knows the Way to My Heart." (Dress rehearsal)
