Oaks Honors Former Staffs
Reviews History of College
LAWRENCE ASHPOLE, editor, guided
the steady schedule of writing copy and
taking photographs to create this book.
Volume XXX
"Ambrosian to Oaks" was selected
for the theme of Volume XXX to
commemorate the service of the first
twenty-nine yearbook staffs, and to
review the expansion of campus facilities since Volume I of the "Ambrosian" was edited in 1913. With
selection of staff completed, a workshop was held on April 8, 1963. Professor C. J. Medlin of Kansas State
University instructed.
April and May were the formative
months. Editor Larry Ashpole and
staff decided to use a three column
format, to introduce color photography, and to use a cover with mylar
process lettering.
Assisting in the editorial department was Larry Grief who did the
art work and cooperated with the
layout of the pages. John Picco
turned his talents to writing and to
checking the copy before sending it
to the printers and to proof reading
when the galleys were received. (He
hopes that the reader learns a bit of
St. Ambrose College history as a
result of his research.)
Joe Scandroli with an assist from
Ron Rzepiela took on the sale of
advertising. Their work contributed
two dollars toward the cost of each
book. The descriptive accounts of
Art editor LAWRENCE GRIEF planned and Literary editor JOHN PICCO did hours
executed the layout and drawings. of research to give facts to his copy.
the Quad City area have been incorporated into the advertising section with the hope that Ambrosians
will have a ready reference when
questioned about their College locale and its assets.
The editor received much help
from the class editors. These men
did the class pages and kept the
indexing in order. Mark Love did
the seniors, Bill Irving the juniors,
Bill Wulff the sophomores, and the
freshmen were worked on by John
Watson and Len Cochman.
Jerry Baur and Jim Bukovec were
responsible for the Music-Drama
and the Athletic sections.
Phil Moloney applied his efforts
to subscriptions at the September
registration and is to be in charge of
distribution in May.
Photography was a cooperative
undertaking. The Staff is especially
proud of several photos among
which is the color photograph on
pages 6 and 7 showing pictorially
various departments of the College.
This is the work of George May.
The color night photo of Centennial
Bridge and the Quad Cities' lights
reflected onto the Mississippi, page
199, was taken by Mark Love. A
helping hand was given by George
Green who did the Unicorn and
band photos.
What goes into a yearbook designed for college students, college
faculty, college alumni, the college
urban community, the high schools
— in fact, all persons interested in
St. Ambrose Gollege? It is the sincere wish of each member of the
staff that the features you want the
most are here so that the 1964 OAKS
will be a good memory book for
you personally. The Staff has suffered the usual complications of any
publications staff: limited money,
limited time, limited talent and at
times, sorry to say, limited cooperation. Despite these problems we
hope that we have caught the true
spirit of St. Ambrose College between the covers of Volume XXX
for you to keep always.
