Description

VERY REV JAMES W. GILLESPIE, V. F.
We are not unmindful of the fact that a very
good account of the life of Very Rev. James W.
Gillespie appeared in the Ambrosian several years
ago. However, we feel that there are a number of
circumstances which justify us in again bringing him
to the attention of our Alumni readers.
First of all, we never tire of seeing our good
friends, no matter how often we meet them, and that
is just what Father Gillespie has always been to St.
Ambrose, a very good and sincere friend. He is a
member of the Board of Turstees of this institution
and is always genuinely interested in all that pertains to its welfare.
Furthermore, Father Gillespie's life history is intimately associated with that of Father Donohoe.
They entered St. Ambrose together and completed
their education here together. They went to the
same Seminary and were ordained on the same day.
Both have labored an equal number of years to advance the cause of religion in the
diocese of Davenport and both have always been anxious to promote the best interests
of their college and ours. Hence it seemed to us very appropriate to place side by side
in this book a testimonial to each of them, only regretting the fact that we cannot make
cur words of appreciation commensurate with the merits of what they have done.
Finally, those who were fortunate enough to attend the recent Homecoming cannot
but agree that Father Gillespie deserves a word of thanks from all Alumni for the
appropriate and inspiring address which he delivered upon that occasion.
St. Ambrose rejoices in the fact that in the year 1890 Father Gillespie chose her as
the school best fitted to impart to him his college education, which he completed in
1896. His Alma Mater rejoiced further when she saw him return after his ordination
in 1899 to take up his labors in the particular field for which she so tirelessly helps to
train zealous and worthy priests. She has watched with satisfaction his year's work at
St. Ambrose Church, Des Moines, his nine years of faithful services at St. Mary's,
Mechanicsville, and his present long and prosperous administration of the affairs of
St. Peter's parish of Keokuk.
With the appointment to the Keokuk parish came his elevation to the Deanery which
goes with it. Father Gillespie has had charge of this important parish for practically
fourteen years and during this time he has found a way to establish it in a leading
position in all branches of parish activity.
We can but hope that what Father Gillespie has done, great though it is, is but a
small part of the innumerable good and useful deeds which will make up the sum
total of his priestly work. May he have many prosperous years to add to his long and
honorable record.
