Description

LOGOMACHETEAN SOCIETY
The need of better training of students for extemporaneous speech gave birth to an
association at St. Ambrose College with this essential purpose in view. The organization known as the Logomachetean Society was formed in the year 1903. The association continued with marked success for some years, but came to an abrupt end at the
close of the year 1911. The records show that during this period the organization was
kept intact by such men as Rev. U. A. Hauber, who named the club; Rev. W. L.
Adrian; Rev. C. H. Meinberg; Rev. T. C. Donohoe; and Rev. H. G. Takkenberg.
Such in brief is the origin and early history of the Logomachetean Society.
The urgent need of such an organization being very much in evidence within recent
years, the old club was reorganized; the reorganization being effected during the latter
part of the school year 1921-1922. With the initiation of many new members into the
club the program for the current year was taken up with sincerity.
The society has for its primary purpose the training of young men to speak before
an audience. In order to speak with facility under such conditions, practice is necessary, and it is the paramount design of the Logomachetean Society to furnish the opportunity for such practice. Practice in speech-making, however, is not the sole purpose of the society. Debates, orations, "mock-trials", and discussions on timely topics
occupy the time of the meetings. Such discussions give the students a better knowledge
of the activities going on in the political, industrial, and commercial world.
The debates are especially interesting in that the very latest laws and bills are introduced as subjects for discussion. A good knowledge of parliamentary rules is acquired
by such debates.
The "mock-trials", along with being very interesting, furnish much amusement for
all the members. Several such trials have been held during the present school year,
and their success has been marked by the formality with which they have been conducted, and the knowledge of law shown by the members involved. The trials are
conducted under the formal procedure of a regular court. Many other novel projects
are proposed for the promotion of interest among the members.
The society has experienced a very prosperous year, and its further success is assured.
The fact that Catholic men of eloquence and oratorical power are much in demand
impresses more strongly the need of. competent men in this field of endeavor. A club
such as the Logomachetean Society furnishes the young man with an unlimited opportunity, since he learns by actual experience to speak with simplicity of language and
plainness of style.
Reflection on the activities and progress made by the Logomachetean Society during
the past year indicates that nothing need be feared for its continuation in the future.
