Description

MIDGET BASEBALL
Time—Early Spring.
Place—Leclaire Gymnasium.
Occasion—Tryouts for Midget Baseball Candidates.
Father Adrian faces a group of inexperienced youngsters, more inexperienced than in previous years. A week or so is spent in the "gym"
working out the arms and scooping up grounders.
The task of cutting down the squad is not begun until a week or two
later, when the scene is shifted to the outdoors. Batting practice and
elimination games are held for three or four evenings, then the axe begins to fall. The best hitters are retained. The siege of intensive fielding practice now occupies the spotlight. Games are played every day
with the Juniors. The team is rapidly rounding into form. Several
games have been arranged for but a full schedule cannot be published
at this time.
The men who survived the elimination process are the following:
"Jake" Lawler, a catcher who possesses a sure throwing arm and who
never lets a pitch get past him; Austin, southpaw and first string pitcher,
has the appearance of a veteran and is a good hitter; O'Leary, a veteran
of last year's team, is a right handed pitcher and a reliable relief man;
Dettman at first base, although having had very little experience, shows
promise of developing into a star; Grady and Elwood are fighting for
the second base position with Grady having the edge because of his hitting ; Kosgard at short is the only infielder left from last year; Burkhardt
at third is rather slow on his feet but hits well; Foley leads the outer
gardeners both in hitting and in fielding; Nigg and O'Leary take care
of the other outfield berths; Robinson is general utility man. The team
shapes up very well on the offensive. The fielding is good, considering
the inexperience of the men. One characteristic of Midget men is apparent, and that is a willingness to work and learn. We have no doubt
that the Midgets will uphold on the diamond that reputation so deservedly won in other fields.
