"DUC" HERLEHY
Junior Basketball Captain 1923
JUNIOR BASKETBALL
While many schools were still being occupied with football, the Juniors were going
through their paces on the basketball court and rapidly rounding into form for the
opening game of the hardest schedule ever drawn up for a Red and Black team. A
total of eighteen games was played with thirteen of these resulting in victories and
five in defeats. The Saintlings managed to even up matters with every team that had
taken their measure in their first meeting by trouncing them by a bigger score in a
leturn game. By virtue of their overwhelming victories over St. Patrick's High of
Iowa City and Columbia Academy of Dubuque, the Juniors had the strongest claim
for the State Academy title.
The schedule was blasted open on December 8th with the Corpus Christi High of
Galesburg being the first victim by the score of 28 to 12. Wilton was next to take the
count by the score of 23 to 8. After holding the Juniors to a standstill during the first
three quarters, St. Patrick's High was the next team to be walloped before the opening
of the new year.
In the opening game of 1923, the highly touted Centerville High five bit the dust in
a one-sided game by the score of 25 to 8.
Then came the first defeat, the trick being turned by the ancient foe—Geneseo,
27 to 21. Wheatland next won fame on the basketball court in the biggest surprise of
the season by defeating the Saintlings in a hair raising contest by the score of 19 to 17.
The academy team next took on the Corpus Christi High in a return game at
Galesburg and took the long end of a 27 to 7 count. In a good old battle of Irish, the
Spalding Institute took the Little Saints into camp at Peoria, 29 to 21.
La Salle-Peru High School, one of the speediest quintets in Illinois, proved to be
easy for the Little Saints, the Catholics romping off with a 32 to 20 victory. Cambridge surprised the Juniors by handing them the short end of a 30 to 19 score.
