For the first time in the history of the school, St. Ambrose is to be represented by a
Varsity track team. The cinder path game is to take its place along with football and
basketball as a major sport and will replace baseball, for this year at least.
And why shouldn't we have a track team ? Much smaller schools than St. Ambrose
have won fame in this branch of athletics by training the men they have who show a
particular aptitude in running, jumping, throwing the weights, and javelin.
Coach Loman has had a squad going through their paces ever since the end of the
basketball season, and, as we go to press, he has a team groomed for the Drake Relays
at Des Moines on April 27 and 28, where the Saints stand a strong chance to win in
both the half mile and mile relay races in which they are entered in the Iowa conference class.
Edwin O'Hair was elected to captain the first track team to run under the colors of
St. Ambrose, and from all present indications should prove to be the leader of a winning team.
Although all the men have had little or no experience in track, several men have
been showing an unusual amount of speed in the daily workouts. Conway, Lew,
Hippler, and Captain O'Hair are counted upon to bring many honors to the local
school, while Sexton, B. Murphy, and Healey are also expected to assist these track-
sters in placing in both the Drake and Conference meets.
T. Murphy, Genster, and several other men have been showing up well in heaving
the discus and the javelin, and should make a good showing in the Iowa conference
meet in May at Des Moines.
