Description

Bishop Gerald F. O'Keefe, president of the
college's board of directors, was chief celebrant of the liturgy marking the annual Feast
of St. Ambrose. Assisting the bishop in
Christ the King Chapel were priests of the
college.
The services saluting the patron saint of
the college were held on Dec. 4, 1983.
Haydn's "Missa Sancti Nicolai," the St.
Nicholas Mass, was sung by the college
choir with accompaniment by 13 members of
the Tri-City Symphony Orchestra. Dr. David
Taylor, assistant professor of music,
directed.
The "Missa Sancti Nicolai" is considered
one of the most melodically beautiful of 12
Masses by Franz Joseph Haydn.
The Ordinary of the Mass was sung in
Latin.
A men's chant choir was formed to
respond to Bishop O'Keefe and the scripture
readers in the traditional Gregorian tones to
which the prayers and readings of the Mass
were chanted.
Haydn's work is musically associated with
St. Nicholas and the Christmas season
through use in the opening and closing
movements of six-four meter, which is unusual in a Mass.
The "Missa" displays Haydn's skill in complex, subtle writing for the solo vocal quartet
normally featured with choir and orchestra
in classical period Masses.
The Feast of St. Ambrose service began
with the Advent processional hymn, "Come,
Thou Redeemer of the Earth," the text of
which is by St. Ambrose, and concluded with
the hymn, "O Come, All Ye Faithful."
The brass section of the St. Ambrose College Band, conducted by Dr. Charles
DCamp, associate professor of music,
accompanied these hymns and played a prelude and postlude to the service.
