Freshmen Class History
A CERTAIN writer has proclaimed that the Freshman year is
the beginning of all College problems. Now the average Collegian perhaps does not regard it as such; nevertheless, our
experience during the past year has enabled us to conceive
the veracity of the author's contention. But despite this fact
we have succeeded in solving the various difficulties and perplexities that have confronted us, and under the efficient guidance of our
esteemed professors, our class has achieved an enviable reputation.
Shortly after the opening of the scholastic term it became apparent
that some means must be taken to keep abreast of the Manning Club; consequently the Delphian Literary and Debating Society was organized.
Joseph Wagner was elected President; James Hannon, Vice-President; and
Joseph Malone, Secretary. The organization progressed rapidly and today
stands foremost among the College Literary societies. It has taken an important place in all intellectual matters and from this society the contestants for the Annual Senior Elocution Contest were selected.
Later on our class was organized. Aloysius Rempe was unanimously
elected President; Joseph Code, Vice-President; Kevin Coughlin, Treasurer;
Henry Overberg, Secretary. This movement aroused Class interest and,
each member having performed his duty unflinchingly, the Freshman Class
developed into one of the most precocious and representative at Saint
Ambrose. Although the acquisition of knowledge has been the aim of each member, Freshman have not been wanting in other circles of College interest. The melodious voices of Frank McGivern and Joseph Code give the touch of
harmony to both the Glee Club and the Choir; while this year the annual
has found in William Hughes and Frank McGivern, men of influence and
ability. Athletics have also secured able support from Freshmen, many of
whom, by distinguishing themselves, both on the field and in the gym, are
numbered among the letter men. Indeed, to do full justice to the Class
many a page would be required to disclose its wonderful achievements, but,
as it is, our successful record speaks for itself.
We are now nearing the close of the scholastic term and within a short
time our Freshmen days will be over. They were pleasant and profitable
days, days of youth and advancement; and their precious memory, time
shall never fade. We cherish the honor of being the Freshman Class of
SAINT AMBROSE, where the foundation of our future life has been so
carefully and so successfully established.
