Junior Baseball
"Our rivals are big,
While we are small,
But the bigger they are
The harder they fall."
WHETHER Demosthenes or Milton or Bob Fitzsimmons made
that remark we do not know, but whoever it was "said a
mouthful." The spirit of the Juniors on the gridiron and
basketball court may sometimes be forced to bow to the
power of avoirdupois," but on the ball diamond—Never!
Art McGivern, the Junior first string boxman, with a little
assistance from Emmett Murphy, his understudy, and "Packy" Phelan,
the "masked marvel," could win the games himself; but his generous impulses usually impel him to have the other members of the team help run
up the Junior score.
If Connie Mack could get the Junior infield combination of Lew at first
base, Nhare at second, Lawlor on third, and O'Donnell at short, the Athletics would probably start shooting up in the percentage column. All of
these men field their positions well and can "hit it where they ain't" hard
and often.
In the outfield Burden in the left and Woeber in the center garden seem
to challenge all opposition, both because of their good batting eyes and
strong batting arms, and because of their ability to grab anything flying
in the air that looks like a "sure nuff" hit. In rightfield Coughlin, Barry
and Schoenfelder are contending for honors.
