"St. Ambrose Won"
YES, INDEED! Won the state championship and Hawkeye
Conference title in 1917, and besides being on the high road
to duplicate this year, expects to add the Mid-West Catholic title to her collection. For although the season is not
yet well under way, Dubuque German College, Wartburg
and Lombard have felt the unpleasant sensation of being on
the short end of a score, and several army and independent teams have also
been defeated.
Chicago University, Notre Dame, Dubuque College, Northwestern,
Wisconsin State Normal and many other dangerous rivals are ominously
impending on the horizon, but the Sheehanites are going forth to battle
with brave hearts.
"Eddie" Smith, "Mother" Ryan, Bill Quigley and several other of last
years stars are now engaged in kaiser catching, but Capt. Sheehan had the
nucleus of the 1917 club to build his nine about. Wallace and Judge are
the boxmen, Devlin the backstop, O'Connor the first baseman, Sheehan at
second, Flynn at third and McLain at shortstop. Coonan, Griffith and Simmons attend to the gardens, while Sinnott is a handy man at the bat.
Floerschinger, Malloy, Jaeger, Bouquet and Suepple made up the rest of the
squad.
