Junior Basketball
IT may not have been a season of unbroken victories—in fact,
to be honest, it was not—but, all things considered, the Juniors' 1917-1918 basket ball season was successful. Every
team they played represented a first-class high school, and
every game they played was clean and well contested.
From the opening battle, which was won from the "Cadillac Eights," to the closing struggle, which was lost by two points to
Maquoketa, the Juniors kept up the old fighting spirit, in spite of reverses.
The first interscholastic game the Juniors lost was the contest with
Aledo High school, at Aledo. The crippled Junior team was smothered by
score of 35-15. In a later game at Davenport the Juniors held the Aledons
by a score of 29-23, although they could hardly have mustered half the
avoirdupois of their opponents.
The first battle with Lyons' High school, fought out on the Juniors' own
floor, was a decisive victory for the local five. In this game the Juniors
appeared at their best. They had, nor needed, no alibi for the defeat at the
hands of Wilton. The quintette from Wilton was a superior team, we may
say the same of Maquoketa, but the fact that the Juniors held the runners-
up (?) for the district championship to a two-point margin, not only soothes
the sting of defeat but is striking evidence of the sturdy caliber of the
Juniors.
At Lyons the Juniors showed real class. Apparently beaten at the end
of the first half, they pushed past their opponents in the second period and
ran up the score to a tie. Then in a thrilling finish, such as Ralph Barbour
would delight in describing, the Juniors won out at the crack of the pistol,
by a score of 35-34. This was in spite of the fact that the game was played
in a gymnasium where a pillar occupied the place of honor usually accorded
to the center ring. To the strategy of Father Adrian, the Junior coach, in
holding the practice scrimmages for the game on a small floor, must be
ascribed the victory.
Capt. Conway, Hand, McLain, Nhare, Quigley, Devereux, Vander Ven-
nett, Cullen, O'Donnell, Woeber, Hauer and Mowry formed the squad,
