Were I to tell you all the attractions of this financial, commercial, industrial, manufacturing and railroad center of Montana, and second largest
city in the state with its population of 40,000, you would better appreciate
Bailey's patriotism.
But Great Falls cannot be described, it must be visited. It is metropolitan in every respect and has in it everything that goes to make a big city.
In our Cathedral parish here, we have twenty-four different nationalities
represented, including our 'Dusky Friend,' Lady Navaralaingnakeaiakeal-
man, a relative of the late Queen Liliuokulani, the deposed regent of the
Hawaiian Islands.
The B. & M. Smelter's daily payroll of $10,000.00 goes a long ways
towards financing the destines of this wonderful cosmopolitan city. Incidentally the smelter possesses the largest smokestack in the world. The
stack of the B. & M. Smelter is 506 feet high, 78 feet at the base, and 50
feet in diameter at the top. It is constructed engineeringly to stand a wind
of 120 miles an hour. Evidently the architect had an eye to the character
of the people.
In iact the only thing Great Falls lacks to make it the greatest city of
the Northwest, is a seaport; but if all its inhabitants could inhale like they
exhale the ocean would be here in about 15 minutes.
So if any inquiring friends ask 'Where does the West begin' just say:
'Out where the handclasp's a little stronger
Out where the smile dwells a little longer,
Where there's more of singing and less of sighing
Where there's more of giving and less of buying,
And a man makes friends without half trying—
That's where the West begins.'
'13. Benjamin Reidy is a lieutenant in the U. S. Marine Corps. At the
time of writing he is with Company 54, U. S. Marine Corps, on the Isle of
Haiti in the West Indies.
'13. Edward O'Toole, for several years engaged in the lumber business
in Texas, entered the Service last September. He is with the Signal Corps,
belonging to the Headquarters Company, 133 Infantry Regiment, Camp
Cody.

'12. Raymond Burke, as elsewhere noted, and Lieutenant John J.
O'Hern, of the Medical Corps, both Academic graduates, are with the
American forces in France.
'12. On the 10th of January, Raymond Barnes was wedded to Miss
Florence Mallet of Reynolds, 111. We extend congratulations.
'12. From the front, Corporal Everett S. Bailey sends his best regards
to all. Everett enlisted in the National Guards Infantry, in Montana soon
alter hostilities broke out. On the transport journey he met his former
colleagues, Ernest Granquist and Raymond Burke. He says he is beginning
