Description

1949-50
BASKETBALL
SEASON
Jim O'Connor, Coach
The great expectations which a promising
1948-49 basketball team had aroused among its
followers failed to come off. Although the 12-9
record of '48-'49 was not one of tremendous
merit, the fact that every one of the young men
who had compiled it would be back for the
1949-50 season was excellent cause to look
for a banner year.
In both conferences, the Midlands and the
Iowa Collegiate, the Bees were touted as the
kingpin. But there were "sleepers" in both
loops who surprised not only the St. Ambrose
team, but all other opponents as well.
In the Midlands conference it was Loras
who moved in on the Bees' title hopes by slipping by the Ambrosians twice, 67-66 and 59-58.
Parsons, usually an indeterminate factor in the
Iowa Conference, jolted the southern division
of the conference into the unpleasant realization
that Parsons had been the doormat of the loop
for too many years.
The Kelly Greens were particularly thorough in their treatment of St. Ambrose. Twice
during the regular season the Fairfield five
thrashed the Bees and then once again when
the two met in a round-robin playoff of a three-
team deadlock in the southern division.
Jack Donnelly, individual scoring champion of the Bees, held onto this honor for the
third straight year. He hit for 291 points and
was further honored by being selected for the
Iowa Conference southern division all-star
team. Don Morris, four-year varsity letterman,
was second ranking Bee scorer and also received a berth on the All-Southern team.
The '48-'49 team erased four records. Don
Morris set a new single-game total with 31
points against Iowa Wesleyan. The Bee team in
swamping Central 95-44 in the first meeting of
the two teams set a new game total. Jack
Donnelly scored more points in his long career
than any other eager at St. Ambrose, striking
for 915 in his four years. Finally a 66.7 average for the year smashed all averages of other
years.
Kneeling: Dhondt, Johnson, Coach Jimmy O'Connor, Czarnecki, Berg.
Standing: Zielinski, Murdock, Waters, Smiley, Lawlis, Donnelly, Bariz, Toohey, Morris, Wolfe,
Poepsel.
