The 1949-50 Student Council, operating for
the second time under the jurisdiction of the
revised student body constitution, convened on
May 24th, 1949, in order to lay the groundwork
for the many tasks connected with the annual
Homecoming celebration. Through the remaining weeks of the summer, committees were
organized to handle the various aspects of the
big event: the parade, the Homecoming Dance,
the Queen contest, the bonfire, publicity, the
football game itself, and the negotiations for
a name band to play at the dance.
In addition to this relatively long-range
planning, the group bought and sold the new
blue and white caps to freshmen, and administered freshmen initiation. As the football
season got underway, it was the Council's responsibility to see to it that Pep Rallies were
organized and attended.
From the opening of the first semester until
Lent, the Council sponsored such various social
activities as the freshman mixer, sweater
dances, formal dances, band engagements,
variety shows, and the promotion of the third
annual Spring Field Day.
Matt Foley, social science major from Oak
Park, 111., succeeded Jack Murray as president
at the second semester. Manning Keigher,
Willie Spring, Bob Peyton and Jim Conover
were other newcomers, replacing Don Doody,
Al Lesniak, Pat Riley and Sam Campagno. Mr.
Kriesa, professor of music, served as council
advisor during the year. In general, the Student Council reflected to the best of its ability
the wishes of the students and the school. It
will be remembered as one of the finest groups
in the history of St. Ambrose College.
