FOR THE COMING YEAR ...
The traditional solemn High Mass marking
the official opening of the school year at St.
Ambrose college was offered September 22, at
the Shrine of the Blessed Virgin on the campus,
with all members of the faculty and student
body in attendance. The Most Rev. Ralph L.
Hayes, bishop of Davenport, presided and
preached the sermon. Officers of the Mass included: The Rt. Rev. Msgr. Ambrose J. Burke,
president of the college, celebrant; The Rev. U.
E. Ruhl, deacon; The Rev. W. T. O'Connor, sub-
deacon; The Revs. E. M. O'Connor and W. J.
Collins, chaplains to the bishop; The Rev. Leo
C. Sterck, college dean of studies and registrar,
master of ceremonies.
The minor officers of the Mass were ecclesiastical students at the college. The college
community choir sang the Mass, under the direction of the Rev. Cletus P. Madsen, heed of
the music department; Dr. Howard Snyder, professor of music, was organist. His Excellency
spoke on "The Crusade in Christ".
