Description

Carnival in '68
Following the successful 1967 run of
Kismet, the eleventh annual St. Ambrose-
Marycrest musical was the production of
Stewart and Merrill's Carnival. As a commentary on modern life the action opposes
the innocence of Lili with the fakery of the
evil magician. The carnival has seen better
days and is plainly second rate, but the
people of the carnival try to create happiness in their illusions of tinsel and spangles.
Lili believes in the carnival completely
and she falls in love with a handsome but
evil magician who hires her as his assistant.
She is saved from him by her own innocence when she over-praises his act and is
thrown out of the carnival. She despairs
over this event and even contemplates
suicide, but is rescued by a shy, young
puppeteer named Paul, who restores her
will to live by showing his love for her
through his puppets.
The scenes on pages 176 & 177 are from annual trip of the combined Chorus and Band trip
taken in February
