Description
Origin of the Serif
"For the past 500 years, we have
been brainwashed by typographers.
While printing was one of the great
inventions in the history of man, unfortunately it brought with it the
degradation of writing and the
elevation of hard-tool at the expense
of soft-tool calligraphy. The fundamental and revolutionary discoveries
expressed in my trilogy: The Trajan
Inscription in Rome, The Origin of the
Serif, and The Imperial Alphabet,
will be of great value to the art of
calligraphy for these once again
assert the primacy of the writing arts
against the claims of the hard-tool
lettering fraternity. In the calligraphic arts this is the new direction
of the future away from the past five
centuries of typographic brainwashing.' —Father E. M. Catich
Involvement
Concern for involvement in school and
social matters is exemplified in the personage of history teacher Fr. John Smith.
Many activities consume the waking
hours of this energetic priest, but teaching is first on this full schedule. As editor of the Catholic Interracial Council
Newsletter, race problems are of great
importance, as evidenced in his participation with Father Groppi
in the Milwaukee march. Also, Father is active in
the Quad-Citizens for Peace movement,
and he participated in the Viet-Nam peace
march and the student peace vigil before
Christmas. He was interested in doing
something about the Drop Out problem
so he initiated "Operation Drop-In" to
help high school students with St.
Ambrose students doing the tutoring.
Father was instrumental in obtaining
notable speakers for the Faculty Lecture
Series.
Father Smith is interested in the student's involvement with life and he feels
one of the ways this can be done is for
the teacher to be a leader and an example, and he must, as a priest, follow
his conscience as a modern man.
