Description
'Origin becomes a reality
Forty years of research, study, creativity, traveling, observation, primary investigation and a good strong portion of
desire has produced The Origin of the Serif by Rev. Edward
M. Catich, Art Department chairman. But this book is only
the second in a series of three devoted to Imperial letters in
ancient Rome. Actually this is his fourth book.
The importance of the Origin is that it is documentary
evidence supporting Father Catich's theory that the serif
was brushed upon the stone by a skillful sign-writer and later
was chiselled out, including the serif or finishing elements of
the letters, carefully by the cutter. Years of research was
conducted by Rev. Catich working with actual inscriptions in
Europe from the period studied.
The entire book was prepared by Catfish Press, another
interest of Father Catich's here at St. Ambrose. With his
knowledge and skill in printing, Rev. Catich can prepare his
own works in calligraphy, paleography, and epigraphy.
