Description

Junior Football
The 1920 Junior Football season was a great success. With Captain "Buddy"
Coughlin returning to school, along with "Red" Gannon and "Tim" Murphy, veterans of '19, the outlook was bright from the start. With these three men forming
the nucleus of the new machine, Father Adrian, the Junior coach, started to develop
new men to fill the gaps left by graduation. Father Adrian has established the name
of being able to make "something out of nothing" and before long several real stars
were unearthed.
The Junior Alumni were the first to accept the Juniors' challenge. This battle,
which resulted in a scoreless tie, afforded Father Adrian the opportunity to ascertain
the faults of the new machine. He set about at once to remedy these, for the next
game, which was to be played at Cedar Rapids. In this game the Juniors were defeated by the Bunnies. The Cedar Rapids eleven was a team of which any college
might well be proud. They won every game of the season and obtained a clear title
to the Championship of Iowa. To be defeated by them was no dishonor.
Des Moines Catholic Academy, West Liberty, Geneseo and Savannah all carried
home the short end of a long story. On Thanksgiving Day, the Juniors journeyed out
to DeWitt for the final game of the season. At the end of the battle the Juniors
found themselves on top of the heap by the score of 20 to 9.
During the season the Juniors won five games, tied one and lost one. They also
secured a tight hold on the Tri-City Football Championship, by virtue of a 35 to 6
win over Geneseo. Rock Island, the acclaimed champions, succeeded in defeating
Geneseo by only a narrow margin of 7 to 3. This comparison gives the Juniors a
clear title.
Captain Coughlin and "Red" Gannon were the two individual stars of the present
season. Gannon showed his true worth to the team, in the Cedar Rapids game, while
playing against Hines, All-State Center. "Bud" could be depended upon at all times
to advance the ball and through his ability alone many of the Junior games were
turned from possible defeat to victory. It is a hard blow to Junior Athletics to lose
both of these men, for not only in football but also in basket ball and baseball they
have brought laurels to the Junior teams.
William Conway, star half-back of '20, has been elected Captain for the 1921
football team and with many of this year's squad returning to school, a well-drilled
team should be placed on the field next fall. Here's wishing Capt. Conway success.
