Description
Varsity Basket Ball
The prize games of the season were the two contests with Augustana. The first
game was played at Le Claire Gym. This contest was the most ferocious tilt of the
schedule. Both teams realized the stakes and really fought. Augustana, through
the ability of Andreen at the foul line, stepped forth from the battle with the 21st
part of the 21 to 16 score. The second game was a heartbreaker for the Ambrosian
rooters. With the score standing 11 to 9 at half time and with Augustana completely
routed, the St. Ambrose crew blew up, temporarily, due to Nolan's injury, and allowed the Swedes to walk through to victory. Score 27 to 15.
Palmer School showed unexpected strength and gave the Saints forty woeful minutes
of fight. At no time during the play did the Saints have over a two-point lead while
at different stages the Chiros had the score slanting their way. Finally, through the
great playing of Jim Fottral, the Varsity won the tilt.
Lombard split a two-game series by losing a spirited game on the local floor and,
catching the Saints in a second depressive mood, after the Augustana game, administered a severe drubbing. Lennox, St. Bedes, St. Marys, Winona, and St. Paul's Seminary fell before the smooth working Ambrosian machine. Monmouth, playing on
their own floor, defeated the Varsity in the first game of the season. But back of it all,
the Monmouth coach must have smelt a rat for he cancelled the game scheduled at
LeClaire gym. Monmouth ranked second in the Little Nineteen conference.
With practically every member of the team expressing his desire to be back next
year, prospects are bright for a quintette capable of holding its own with the best in
the country for the season of 1921-22.
