Description

Junior Collegiate Class History ONE HOT DAY in the early part of September, 1909, thirty-three
"freshies" entered the portals of St. Ambrose College and enrolled themselves in the Academic course. From the beginning
they made their presence known to their fellow-students and
were among the leaders, both in the class-room and on the athletic field.
In the second year, while our number was reduced somewhat,
we attracted a great deal of attention on the athletic field, we furnished six
members of the Academic Football team and had one man on the "varsity" Basketball five.
The next year we organized into a firmer body, elected officers, and from then
on it was not a group of individuals acting separately, but it was the class that
acted in all matters pertaining to the various activities of the school. This year
three of our members secured places in the Elocution contest and we were well
to the front in the line of dramatics and music. On the athletic field we had five
men on the "varsity" football squad and one man on the "varsity" basketball
team.
In our fourth year seventeen returned to finish their course. This year further laurels were added to our class on the gridiron, the diamond and on the basketball floor. The cartoonist of the '13 Ambrosian was a member of our class
as was also the winner of the Right Reverend Bishop's medal for the winner of
the Elocution contest. Our assistance was asked in preparing all the literary and
musical programs of the year and we contributed largely to the successes of the
Dramatic society. Our standard of scholarship for the fours was high and our
diplomas came as a fitting reward.
For the Freshman Collegiate year we had but five members, but what we
lacked in quantity we made up for in quality, the Loras Council No. 532, K. of C,
gold medal for the best essay on some historical subject was awarded to a member of our class and we took a prominent place in the Senior literary and debating societies. Of those who did not return, some are taking professional or scientific courses in various Universities, while others are making a name for themselves in the business world. In our Junior year the number is the same and we have elected the following officers: President, Clement Wagner; Secretary, Wm. B. Schmidt, and
Historian, Paul A. Kleinfelder. May we ever be faithful to our dear old Alma
Mater and in years to come, when we look back and recall old times and faces,
may we ever have pleasant thoughts of the happy days spent among the oaks
on the bluff above the mighty and majestic "Father of Waters."
PAUL A. KLEINFELDER, '16.
