Description

Ode to Alma Mater!
Ofttimes in pensive mood
Gladness steals o'er me,
When Alma Mater's form
Looms up before me.
Midst stately oaken groves
Proudly she towers;
Droop o'er her garments green
Clusters of flowers.
While through her charm'd halls
I alone wander,
Oft' o'er familiar scenes
Pause I to ponder.
Then echo from afar
Long silent voices;
While friendly hands clasp mine
My heart rejoices.
Comrades of boyhood speak
Greetings warm-hearted;
Mem'ry brings back again
Days long departed.
Campus and study-hall,
Long-cherished places,
Call from the distant past
Familiar faces.
Phantoms of school-boy fears,
Triumphs, disgraces,
Mingled with those of joy,
Mem'ry embraces.
True is the saying, as
Virgil would have it
"Haec olim mem'nisse
Forsitan juvabit."
In the halcyon days of youth
St. Ambrose College
Guided my footsteps to
Fountains of knowledge.
Dear to my heart was then
This loving Mother;
Still she my love doth claim
As can no other.
Come, brothers, let us then
Gather in meeting,
And to our Mother send
Fond, loyal greeting.
